Where is the Calbayog Sanitarium and Hospital located?

The Calbayog Sanitarium and Hospital is located on the island of Samar, the Philippines third largest island.  You can
see a MAP HERE.  Calbayog as a city has an area that is the fifth largest in the country.  In addition, it's strategically located and is the only city on the island.

While much of the surrounding area that the hospital cares for is economically challenged, Calbayog is the center of
trade for the upper-half of the population on the island having trading and transportation routes including the Pan Philippine Highway that transects the city.

What areas are served by the Calbayog Sanitarium
and Hospital at present?

The Calbayog Sanitarium and Hospital is one of the few hospitals serving the region.  The hospital serves the city of Calbayog, and the municipalities both in the upper-half Western area (including Tarangnan, Gandara, Sto Nino
and Almagro) and the Southeastern area of Northern Samar (including San Isidro, San Antonio, Allen and others).
We our vital to the region.

With a combined population of over 500,000 people, Calbayog plays a very important role to the surrounding areas and especially to those patients who could not afford the additional traveling expense in going to other medical facilities.  Moreover, as civil infrastructure improves our hospital outreach would greatly expand covering more a much larger area including up to Catarman and nearby towns that would place up to 1,000,000 people for our catchment area.

Can you describe the hospital's physical
plant and layout?

The Calbayog Hospital is a one story 300 sq meter building consisting of one main hospital building, a kitchen cum canteen (not operational now), an OPD extension and conference room, and a maintained shed-garage.  In addition, we have 4 staff houses
with 2 needing major repairs.  And while we have 25 beds we are rated as a 15 bed hospital.  Also situated on the property is the Calbayog Adventist Multi-grade School and the Calbayog Adventist Center.

There are two major wings of the hospital that interconnect to each other. The first constructed in 1984 and the rest in 1998.
All in all there are 2 operating rooms and a DR in one; a small emergency room; 1 private non-air condition room, a small dental office, laboratory room, and OPD Annex and conference room, a nursing service and chaplain office.

We have rooms supposedly for an ICU and NICU, but do not have needed equipment except for an oxygen tank and gauge.  Moreover, the integrity of the newly constructed wing needs work and the old wing constructed with wooden beams and trusses needs termite treatment.  Ideally, with outside donations from good people like you, we could re-roof the compound and add steel trusses.

The last major addition to the hospital was way back in 1998 through a grant provided by the Adventist Health System then
headed by Ms. Thelma Robles-Selerio.  This wing presently houses our Pediatric, Obstetric, Male and Female wards, 2 private rooms and a business office.

What type of medical equipment do
you have or need?

Most, if not just about all our medical equipment is fully depreciated.  Our x-ray machines are over 30 years old, our chemistry analyzer is not owned by the hospital but is lent to us by and Adventist owned medical reagent supplier.
Frankly, the hospital is woefully ill equipped compared to other Adventist hospitals.

Moreover, we don't have an ambulance or adequate transportation equipment.  Our assets in the form of capital
equipment is nearly non-existent and basic items like EKG and a pulse oximeter are in the process of frequent repair
and in most instances, many items need to be replaced.  Any donations to our needy hospital would be
greatly appreciated!

Can you describe your manpower component
and job positions?

Unlike the more progressive area of the Philippines, the Adventist population in Samar has not produced enough health professionals to serve as a manpower tool where the hospital could get its personnel needs.

At present, only the nurse aids, pharmacist (about to retire), housekeeping and maintenance personnel are from
Calbayog or Samar.  Only one of our staff nurses is from the area due to a manpower shortage.  Our physician and nurses come from other parts of the country.  However, some non-Adventist physicians bring their patients to the hospital.
A practice that began several years ago and was maximized during the last three years.

How could we address the manpower component?

Finding missionary minded physicians (that would serve locally) is difficult.  Nevertheless, we should definitely get
Adventist physicians to serve either as staff or visiting consultants.  Nursing staffing may well be a coordinated and a collaborative effort among the AHS/A hospitals in the region.

Opening of the hospital in terms of training with residents, medical interns and nurses would have to be done.  Nursing
and Medical schools are in the region of Calbayog and might have to be tapped for both the hospital to grow and to
augment its manpower current needs.

What are the major challenges that
face your hospital?

Seemingly the challenges are insurmountable and ceaseless.  However, with God nothing is impossible.
Our challenges are summarized below:

1.
Improved Hospital Administrative and Business processes.  While our goal is to create greater revenue and to be a sustainable member of the AHS/A system, our business processes need to be examined and improvements implemented.

2.
Improved Physical Plant and Equipment.  There has to be a calculated improvement in the physical plant itself.  An expanded ER is necessary, a more patient friendly OPD complex with more offices for physicians, relocation of the OR
and NICU and ICU ensuring it's aptly equipped and staffed, and a chapel for worship services and prayer.

3.
Manpower Development and Sustainability.  We have to attract physicians.  The core of which should be committed SDAs who we believe would integrate their faith and spiritual values into their medical practice here.  However, it's
imperative we can offer them decent housing, not a shack, pay them opportunities to grow.

Once a nucleolus is made this core group could influence the other physicians.  Nurses also need a program that would provide training and work experience knowing they would serve here at least for 2 to 5 years.

4.
Open the hospital for affiliation with medical and nursing schools.  With the increasing number of medical schools offering nursing and the allied medical sciences, opportunities are opening-up that would allow this hospital to become a venue for affiliation.  In doing so, we also would boost our manpower pool from which we could select future workers.

5.
Increased Marketing, Outreach and Community Services.  An effort has to be made to look for and attract more
paying patients and yet expand services to the economically less fortunate and needy.  Contacts must be established
with the community, friendships reinvigorated, and participation in the community and city activities would be areas of address.

6.
Spiritual Rejuvenation and Value Formation among the Hospital Staff.  With the economic difficulties besetting the Philippines, we have to turn to God to guide us asking for His blessings with the condition that we fully submit our lives to HIM.  At the same time, we have to have an atmosphere of trust and camaraderie among the hospital workers knowing that we are going through life together and committed to a greater service and calling to glorify our God.

What is the financial status of the hospital,
is it surviving?

The operations for the year of 2003 showed a net income of about P/250,000 from a revenue base of P/6.5M.  This was vastly different from the scenario of a P/200,000 loss last 2002.  Yet, from the point of view of the staff, the hospital
has been able to pay the salaries of its workers in time.  However, because of the spending patterns of the past,
particularly about a decade and half ago, the hospital is indebted to the Central Philippine Union Conference in the
amount of P/4.2M.  Thanks be to God we are regularly remitting payments back to them.

Who composes the management that runs
the Calbayog Hospital?

Prior to 2003, many of the Adventist hospitals in the Philippines were governed by a collection of various unions and conferences.  However, today the Calbayog Sanitarium and Hospital is part of the umbrella network of hospitals governed
by the the Adventist Health System/Asia (AHS/A) system.

The AHSA has brought in common standards, more managerial inputs, better knowledge of industry practices
and challenges and coordinated efforts to help us. AHS/A, a department of the South Asia Pacific Division, is
headed by Mr. Don Weidemann.

However, the Philippines is divided into three zones, and Calbayog belonging to the central Philippines, is headed by the Regional Vice President Mr. Rufo Gesapo.  Mr. Gesapo is also the President of Bacolod Sanitarium and Hospital and the Chair of the Board of Calbayog Sanitarium and the H.W. Miller Memorial Hospital.

Within the Calbayog Hospital is the Administrative Council which is composed of the President, the Vice President for Finance, Ms. Jo Ann Amparo, MBA CPA, Pharmacist Ms. Linda Balag, the District Pastor, Pastor Rolly Ronato and the
Nursing Service Coordinator, Mr. Rey Booz LaPoore.

The creation of our website was donated by Mark Bishop and Adventist Domains provides our free web hosting and maintenance services.
